Configure Ping Federate as an OAuth/OpenId Connect Server in Joomla

miniOrange Joomla OAuth/OpenID module gives the ability to enable OAuth/OpenID Single Sign On for Joomla site. Joomla OAuth Client plugin is compatible with all OAuth/OpenID Providers. Here we will go through a guide to configure SSO between Joomla and Ping Federate. By the end of this guide, Ping Federate users should be able to login and register to Joomla site.

Step 1: Setup Ping Federate as OAuth Provider

  • Login to your Ping Federate User Admin dashboard.
  • Click on the OAuth Server in the left navigation menu.
  • Under Clients section, click on Create New.
  • Ping Federate - New OAuth Client
  • Enter the Client ID, Name and Description. Select Client Secret in Client Authentication and click on Generate Secret. Take a note of your Client ID & Client Secret.

  • Copy the Redirect/Callback URL from the module/plugin and enter it in Redirect URIs field and click on Add. Select the Authorization Code grant type and click on the Save.

  • You have successfully completed your Ping Federate App OAuth Server side configurations.



  • Scope openid
    Authorize Endpoint https://{your-base-url}/as/authorization.oauth2
    Access Token Endpoint https://{your-base-url}/as/token.oauth2
    Get User Info Endpoint https://{your-base-url}/idp/userinfo.oauth2

Step 2: Configure miniOrange Joomla OAuth Client plugin.

  • Download the zip file for the miniOrange OAuth Client plugin for Joomla from the link here.

  • Login into your Joomla site’s administrator console.
  • Go to Extension Manage Install in the top navigation bar to install the plugin.

  • Upload the downloaded zip file to install the OAuth Client plugin.

  • Navigate to Extensions Manage Manage and search for miniorange in the Search bar provided to see the list of the components.
  • Go to Components MiniOrange OAuth Client in the top navigation bar to go to the configuration page of the plugin.

  • In the Configure OAuth tab, select your OAuth/OpenID Connect provider. If your OAuth/OpenID Connect provider is not listed, you can select Custom OAuth/OpenID Connect provider to continue.

  • Copy the Redirect/Callback URL given in the plugin and save it in your OAuth Provider and then click on the Test Configuration button.

  • Now copy the email and name attributes you got in the test configuration and save these attributes in Email Attribute and Name Attribute text field respectively. Now click on the Save Attribute Mapping button to save your configurations.

  • Add a button on your site login page with the following URL:
    your_home_page/base_url/?morequest=oauthredirect&app_name=xxxxxxxxx
  • Please note: You would find appropriate URL after selecting the OAuth/OpenID Connect provider in the Login URL field (After completing test configuration please copy the Login URL and Add a button on your site login page).

  • Now logout and go to your site. You will see a login link where you placed that button.
  • Click on the Upgrade Plans tab to check out our complete list of features and various licensing plans.
