Set up Yubikey Hardware Token Authenticator for Two Factor Authentication on Joomla (2FA/MFA)


Setup Yubikey Hardware Token with Joomla Two Factor Authentication (TFA/MFA) plugin. This guide will help you to configure Yubikey Hardware Token as Second Factor Authentication method for your Joomla site. The plugin offers over 15 different two factor authentication methods accessible for logging into Joomla, including Google Authenticator, TOTP, OTP over SMS, OTP over email, Push Notifications, OTP over Telegram / WhatsApp and more to add second layer of authentication to your Joomla account .

Passwordless Authentication :-

Passwordless authentication allows users to log in without the need of a password. Instead of conventional username and password, users can also login by entering their phone number or email address and receive a one-time code (OTP) or link on their phone number/email address, which they can use to log in.

Steps to Configure Yubikey Hardware Token TFA for your Joomla site


1. Install miniOrange 2-Factor authentication (2FA/MFA) Plugin


  • Download the zip file for the miniOrange Two-Factor Authentication plugin for Joomla from the link here.
  • Now go to the System -> under Install section -> click on Extensions and upload the downloaded zip file of the plugin in the Upload Package File option.

  • Once the zip file is uploaded go to Components menu -> miniOrange Two Factor Authentication -> Account Setup.

  • You can login with your miniOrange credentials here. If you have not purchased the license you can also click on Activate free trial below to login and test the premium features of the plugin.

  • Download the zip file for the miniOrange 2-Factor authenticationient plugin for Joomla from the link here.
  • On your Joomla admin console go to Extensions Manage Install
  • 2FA (2 Factor Authentication / MFA) for Joomla
  • Under Upload Package File tab. Drag the downloaded file OR upload file by click on browse for file

  • Go to Components miniorange Two Factor authentication Acount Setup
  • Joomla 2FA enable new Plugin
  • You can login with your miniOrange credentials here. If you have not purchased the license you can also click on Activate free trial below to login and test the premium features of the plugin.

2. Test Yubikey Hardware Token Authenticator method

  • First go to the Login Settings tab. Enable the “Enforce Two Factor Authentication” option and select the desired option in “Enable for” described below :-

    End users only- If you want to invoke TFA for the group of end users (registered, publisher, editor, etc.).

    Admin- If you want to invoke TFA for the group of Administrators and superusers.

3. Select specific authentication methods for users

  • Under the Select specific authentication methods below in the login settings tab enable Yubikey Hardware Token Authenticator method and click on Save Settings button.

  • Next go to the login panel of your Joomla site and after logging in with user credentials you will see the following dialog for TFA setup.
  • Joomla 2 Factor authentication (2FA) (MFA) with Yubikey Hardware Token ,
  • Now Insert the YUBIKEY HARDWARE in your device then tap on the key to generate a one time passcode and click on Verify.
  • You have successfully set up YubiKey Hardware Token as your second factor authentication method.
