How the User Force Logout feature works in Drupal

In this document, you will see how this feature helps forcefully log out user or admin accounts after a set period of time. The Drupal User Session Management module is compatible with Drupal 8, Drupal 9, Drupal 10 and Drupal 11.

  • Download the module:

    composer require 'drupal/session_management'

  • Navigate to Extend menu on your Drupal admin console and search for Session Management using the search box.
  • Enable the module by checking the checkbox and click on the Install button.
  • You can configure the module at:

    {BaseURL}/admin/config/people/session-management/session-management

  • Install the module:

    drush en drupal/session_management

  • Clear the cache:

    drush cr

  • You can configure the module at:

    {BaseURL}/admin/config/people/session-management/session-management

  • Navigate to Extend menu on your Drupal admin console and click on Install new module.
  • Install the Drupal Session Management module either by downloading the zip or from the URL of the package (tar/zip).
  • Click on Enable newly added modules.
  • Enable this module by checking the checkbox and click on install button.
  • You can configure the module at:

    {BaseURL}/admin/config/people/session-management/session-management

Note: You will require the Premium Version of the module to configure the User Force Logout feature.


  • Navigate to Configuration > People > Session Management.

Note: If you're not logged in, please log in using the miniOrange credentials used to purchase the license.


  • Under the Auto Logout Settings tab, go to the User Force Logout Settings section.
  • Turn on the Force User Logout toggle button.
  • Under Force User Logout Time, you can set the time after which you want the system to log you out forcefully.
  • Click on the Save Configuration button.

  • Open a new browser, such as Edge, or a private/incognito window and log in (base_url/user/login) to the Drupal site.
  • The user is forcefully logged out after the configured time period, as shown in the GIF below.
