Configure Two-Factor Authentication in Joomla using OTP

Set up Two-Factor Authentication in Joomla using OTP over SMS/Email. This guide will help you configure OTP as a Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) method for your Joomla site using our miniOrange Joomla 2FA plugin. The Joomla 2FA plugin adds an extra layer of security to your Joomla account, protecting your site from unauthorized logins and potential hacks.

  • Download the .zip file for the miniOrange 2FA Plugin for Joomla using the link above.
  • Now go to System -> under Install section -> click on Extensions.
  • Now under Upload Package File click on browse for file then select the .zip file of 2FA plugin.
  • After the installation is complete click on Start using miniOrange 2FA Plugin.
  • In the Account Setup tab, enter your account credentials and log into your account.
  • Now go to the Login Settings tab. Here, make sure that Enforce Two-Factor Authentication is checked. You can enforce 2FA for both Admins and End Users from the drop down menu. Under authentication methods section, enable the OTP methods of your choice by checking their respective boxes.

User flow for OTP via SMS/Email 2FA method:

  • When a user tries to log into the Joomla site for the first time, they will be presented with the following window. Here, they can select the authentication method of their choice. We will be selecting OTP over SMS method for this guide. Then click on Select & Next.

  • In the next window, enter your phone number and click on the Send OTP button. Enter the OTP you received in the given field, then click on Verify & Next.

  • You have successfully configured 2FA Authentication in your Joomla site.
