How to Set Up Shopify Email Password Login on Shopify Plus Customer Accounts?

By default, Shopify's new customer accounts are passwordless - customers can only sign in with a one-time code sent to their email. With our MO: Customer Accounts Login app, merchants can add email and password login back to Shopify Plus customer accounts, so customers sign in with the credentials they already know instead of waiting for a code in their inbox. This guide covers the complete email password login setup - enabling the option in the app, copying the OpenID Connect credentials, registering them as a custom identity provider in Shopify, and testing the login end to end.

  • Log in to your Shopify Admin.
  • Go to AppsShopify App Store.
  • Search for MO: Customer Accounts Login.
  • Install the MO: Customer Accounts Login app on your store.
  • Open the app from the Apps section in the left navigation menu to start the configuration.
  • The store must be a Shopify Plus store with new Customer Accounts activated.
  • From your Shopify Admin, open the Apps menu and click on MO: Customer Accounts Login.

  • Scroll down to the New User Signup section and turn on Enable User Signup so new customers can create an account and set their own password.
  • The setting saves automatically - you will see a B2B configuration saved confirmation.

Note: You can enable multiple login options at the same time, including Email & Password, Email OTP, Phone OTP, Sign in with Shop, and SSO. Only the options you enable here appear on the storefront login screen. Leave any other options on if you want customers to choose from more than one sign-in method.

Not on its own. Shopify's new customer accounts are passwordless by design and send a six-digit code to the customer's email address every time they sign in. To get email and password login on Shopify, you need to connect a custom identity provider.

How to add email and password login to Shopify customer accounts:
In the app:

Turn on Enable Email & Password Login under Storefront Login Options, then copy the OpenID Connect credentials from the Connect Store tab.

In Shopify:

Go to Settings → Customer accounts, add a Custom or other identity provider using the MO: Customer Accounts Login application credentials, and click Activate. Customers can then sign in with a username and password on your storefront.

Yes. Legacy (classic) customer accounts supported passwords natively, and stores migrating to new customer accounts lose that by default. Connecting a custom OpenID Connect identity provider restores password-based login on new customer accounts, so you can complete the migration without forcing every customer onto OTP.

What happens to your existing customers:

Customer records are preserved: Orders, addresses and marketing preferences stay attached to the same Shopify customer profile.

Passwords are set once: Legacy passwords are not carried over by Shopify, so each customer sets a password the first time they sign up through the new login screen, verified by a single one-time code.

No repeat OTP: After that first verification, every subsequent login uses only the email address and password.

Only the login options you enable in the app appear on the storefront login screen, so a password-only experience is a matter of enabling one option and leaving the other off.

How to switch from OTP to password login on Shopify:

Step 1: In the app, open Storefront Login Options → Login Options.

Step 2: Turn on Enable Email & Password Login.

Step 3: Turn off Enable Email OTP Login and Enable Phone OTP Login.

Customers will now see only the username and password fields when they sign in to their account.

The custom identity provider setting under Customer accounts is a Shopify Plus feature, so the setup described in this guide requires a Plus plan with new customer accounts enabled.

If the Identity provider section is missing:

Contact Shopify support and ask them to enable the custom identity provider option for your store. This is noted directly in the app's Setup SSO for Customer Accounts banner.

If you are not on Shopify Plus:

Reach out to our team and we can advise on the login options available for your plan.

No. The one-time code is used only once, during signup, to confirm the customer owns the email address they registered with. Every login after that uses just the email address and password - no code is sent and nothing needs to be checked in the inbox.

If a customer forgets their password, the Forgot password? link on the login screen sends a reset link to the same verified email address.
