How to Enable Phone OTP Login on Shopify Plus Customer Accounts?

By default, Shopify's new customer accounts are passwordless - customers can only sign in with a one-time code sent to their registered email. With our MO: Customer Accounts Login app, merchants can enable phone OTP login option back to Shopify Plus customer accounts, so customers sign in with the credentials they already know instead of waiting for a code in their inbox. This guide covers the complete phone OTP login setup - enabling the option in the app, copying the OpenID Connect credentials, registering them as a custom identity provider in Shopify, and testing the login end to end.

Pre-requisites: App Installation

• Log in to your Shopify Admin.
• Go to Apps → Shopify App Store.
• Search for MO: Customer Accounts Login.
• Install the MO: Customer Accounts Login app on your store.
• Open the app from the Apps section in the left navigation menu to start the configuration.
• The store must be a Shopify Plus store with new Customer Accounts activated.

Step by Step guide to Enable Phone OTP Login on Shopify Plus Customer Accounts

Step 1: Enable Phone OTP Login in the App

• From your Shopify Admin, open the Apps menu and click on MO: Customer Accounts Login.

• On the app dashboard, scroll down and locate the Storefront Login Options card and click Edit.

• You will land on the Login Options page. Open the Storefront Login Settings tab.
• For this guide, turn on Enable Phone OTP Login. This lets your customers log in with OTP.
• Scroll down to the New User Signup section and turn on Enable User Signup so new customers can create an account and set their own password.
• The setting saves automatically - you will see a B2B configuration saved confirmation.

Step 2: Copy the OpenID Connect Credentials from Connect Store

• Click on Connect Store in the app's left navigation, then scroll down to the credentials section.
• Copy all five values - Well-known or discovery endpoint URL, Client Id, Client Secret, Additional scopes and Post-logout redirect URI parameter name. You will need these in the next step.

Step 3: Add the Identity Provider in Shopify Customer Accounts

• In a new tab, go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Customer accounts. Under Authentication, find the Identity provider section and click Manage providers.

• Click on the Connect to provider button.

• Open the Provider dropdown and select Custom or other.

• Enter an Identity provider name - for example miniOrange Login.

• Scroll down to the Application info section and paste the values you copied in Step 2 into the matching fields.
• Click on Save.

• Once the provider is created, click on the Activate button in the top right corner.

• The status badge next to the provider name changes from Inactive to Active. Your phone OTP login is now activated on Shopify customer accounts.

Step 4: Test the Phone OTP Login Flow

• Go back to the app, open Connect Store and click the Test Connection button in the top right corner.

• A login window opens with a Sign in option where you can select your country code, enter your phone number, and click Send SMS to receive a verification code.

• Enter your phone number in the provided field, and then click Send SMS to receive a verification code on your phone.

• Enter the OTP sent to your phone number, then click Verify to continue with your login. If you didn’t receive the OTP, click Resend OTP to request a new code.

• Once the test connection is successful, click Close Window to exit the window.

Step 5: Verify Phone OTP Login on your Storefront

• Open your storefront and click the account icon in the header.

• Enter your registered phone number and click Send SMS to receive an OTP. Enter the OTP sent to your phone number and click Verify to complete the login.

• You are logged in to your Shopify customer account. The Phone OTP Login for Shopify Customer Accounts is now live for your customers.
