How does WordPress Multisite SSO Plugin Work?
Workflow
The WordPress multisite SSO plugins allows you to establish an SSO connection in your WordPress multisite network, allowing your users to access all the subsites by authenticating only once. Once the plugin is successfully configured, SSO will be enabled for all the subsites in that network.
- User trying to access subsite 1 will be redirected to the network site login page with an authentication request.
- The user will enter ther credentials and a secure JWT token will be sent back to the subsite 1 for creating the user session.
- Now, if the user tries to access subsite 2, they will be able to seamlessly access it without being prompted to log in again.
Types of Multisite Networks
Subdirectory multisite network
In this type of network, the URL of the subsites follow a subdirectory path structure. For example, if the URL of your main site is abc.com, the subsites will be in the form abc.com/site1, abc.com/site2, etc.
Subdomain multisite network
In this network, each subsite will have an individual subdomain on your main domain. For example, if the URL of your main site is abc.com, the subsites will be in the form site1.abc.com, site2.abc.com, etc.
Custom domain multisite network
WordPress also supports creating totally independent custom domains for each of the subsites. For example, if the URL of your main site is abc.com, the subsite can be in the form: site1.com, site2.com, xyz.com, etc.
