Magento 2FA - Extension Inquiries  Extension Inquiries

What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for Magento?

Two-Factor Authentication adds a second layer of authentication on top of the username and password. After entering their credentials, the user must verify their identity with a second factor such as a one-time code from an authenticator app, SMS, or email before access is granted. The miniOrange Magento 2FA extension applies this to both your store's frontend (customer) and backend (admin) accounts, protecting against account takeover, brute force attacks, and unauthorized logins.

Can I enable 2FA for customers (frontend), not just admins?

Yes. The extension supports MFA for frontend customer accounts as well as backend admin users. You can enforce 2FA at registration, apply it to specific customer groups, and even trigger verification at checkout based on rules like cart value.

Can I enforce 2FA only for certain users, roles, or stores?

Yes. You can enable 2FA based on admin roles, customer groups, specific domains, individual stores in a multisite setup, and IP address ranges. You can also whitelist trusted IP addresses so 2FA is bypassed for designated locations.

Can I use my own SMS and email gateway?

Yes. miniOrange's 2FA extension for Magento lets you configure your own custom SMTP (email) and SMS gateways.

What happens if a user gets locked out or loses their device? Does the extension provide backup methods?

Magento 2 2FA extension includes multiple backup login methods so users aren't permanently locked out. Options include a backup login method, KBA (security questions), Backup codes etc. Admins can also reset a user's 2FA method from the user management panel.
