SAML Single Sign-On (SSO) For Shopify Using Azure AD as IDP
miniOrange allows Azure AD to act as an IDP (Identity Provider), which allows users to Single Sign-On (SSO) into Shopify using (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD Credentials. Our application is compatible with all the SAML / OAuth compliant Identity Providers. We will go through a step-by-step guide to configure Single Sign-On (SSO) into Shopify using (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD as IdP (Identity Provider) and Shopify store as SP (Service Provider).
Pre-requisite : Single Sign On - SSO Application
To configure SSO into Shopify using (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD as IDP, you will need to install the miniOrange Single Sign On - SSO Login Application on your Shopify store:
miniOrange Provides Secure Single Sign-On (SSO) access to your Shopify stores (both plus and Non plus Stores).
Step by Step guide for Single Sign-On in Shopify Store Using (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD
1. Configuring Shopify as Service Provider (SP) in (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD
- Log in to (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD Portal
- Select Azure Active Directory.
- Select Enterprise Application.
- Click on New Application.
- Click on Create your own Application.
- Enter the name for your app, then select Non-gallery application section and click on Create button.
- Click on Setup Single sign-on .
- Select the SAML tab.
- Click on Edit.
- For the above SAML configuration you need to get the Entity ID and ACS URL from Shopify

Now go to your Shopify store and navigate to App section and click on Single Sign On - SSO
login application.
- Click on Setup IDP button in the top left in navigation bar.
- Click on Configure SSO >> Add Identity Provider.
- Select SAML protocol. Now click on the Click here link to get miniOrange metadata as shown in
Screen below.
- For SP - INITIATED SSO section Select Show Metadata Details.
- Enter the values in the basic SAML configuration as shown in the below screen
- By default, the following Attributes will be sent in the SAML token. You can view or edit the claims sent in the SAML token to the application under the Attributes tab.
- Download Federation Metadata xml. This will be used while configuring the (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD as IDP in Step 2.
- Assign users and groups to your SAML application.
- As a security control, (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD will not issue a token allowing a user to sign in to the application unless (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD has granted access to the user. Users may be granted access directly, or through group membership.
- Click on Users and groups from the applications left-hand navigation menu. The next screen presents the options for assigning the users/groups to the application.
- After clicking on Add user, Select Users and groups in the Add Assignment screen.
- The next screen presents the option for selecting user or invite an external user. Select the appropriate user and click on the Select button.
- Here, you can also assign a role to this user under Select Role section. Finally, click on Assign button to assign that user or group to the SAML application.

2. Configure (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD as Identity Provider (IDP) in Shopify

Again navigate to the App section of Shopify store and click on Single Sign On - SSO
Login application.
- Click on Setup IDP button in the top left in navigation bar.
- From the left navigation bar select Configure SSO and click on Add Identity Provider.
- Select SAML and click on Import IDP metadata.
- Choose appropriate IDP name. Browse for the file downloaded in step 1.
- Click on Import.
- As shown in the below screen the IDP Entity ID, SAML SSO Login URL and x.509 Certificate will be filled from the file imported.
- Click on Save. You have successfully completed Shopify side configuration.
3. Set Default Relay State in Azure AD or Microsoft Entra ID (Only in IDP Initiated SSO Configuration)
- Go to the Configure SSO tab.
- Click on Select >> Show SSO Link option against the Identity Provider you configured.
- Copy the SSO URL Link.
- Now go to the Single sign-on tab in Azure AD or Microsoft Entra ID. Under Basic SAML Configuration tab and click on Edit.
- Paste the copied SSO URL Link in the Relay State section.
- Click on Save.
4. Test Connection
- Go to Configure SSO tab.
- Click on Select>>Test Connection option against the Identity Provider you configured.
- On entering valid (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure Ad credentials you will see a Test Successful window which as shown in below screen.
- By default the Attribute Value i.e. "your email address" will be received in the NameID Key Attribute field. In case if the Attribute Value is received in any other Key attribute field, copy that key attribute. For example in the below image the Key:value pair is "ABC":"xyz@xecurify.com". Copy the Key attribute value i.e. ABC.
- Click on Go back to Store button at top right corner.
- Scroll down to Attribute mapping section and here in the Email field paste ABC.
5. Testing SSO for your Shopify Store

Testing SSO into Shopify using your Azure AD or Microsoft Entra ID credentials.
- Go to your Shopify Store login page.(https://<your-shopify-storedomain>/account/login)
- Click on the login button you customized earlier.
- You’ll be redirected to the login page of the IDP you configured in previous step. Log in with your IDP account credentials.
- You’ll be successfully logged in to your Shopify store.
Hence your configuration of (Microsoft Entra ID) Azure AD as IDP in Shopify is successfully completed.
Troubleshooting
invalid_request
This may be because your primary domain would be different from your Shopify domain. To check your primary domain and make SSO work, follow the steps given here.
shopify_plan_expired
This issue arises when either the trial period of your Development plan is expired. Or if your plan is not auto-renewed from the Shopify end. Contact us at shopifysupport@xecurify.com to resolve the plan upgrade issue and get smooth functioning of the SSO – Single Sign On Application.
invalid_attributes_received
As email is a required entity in Shopify for account creation as well as login operation, Single Sign On is not successful in this case. To resolve this error, please follow given here.
encountered_an_error
When I am performing SSO, I am getting ‘Please verify if Shopify App is installed’ error. To resolve this error, please follow given here.

I have followed the steps to set IdP but where can I check SSO?
Follow the steps outlined here. to configure SSO in Shopify with your preferred IDP.
I installed the Shopify SSO application. I clicked on the “SETUP IDP” option but nothing opened up.
Redirection to any other site might be blocked in the browser. Please follow the steps given here to resolve the issue.
When I try to perform SSO, I get redirected to the “Incorrect App Configuration” page and then after subsequent attempts, I get redirected to https://store.xecurify.com/moas/login page.
You might be trying to perform SSO in the different tab of the same browser where you have
opened
our Single Sign-On – SSO Application or accessed the configuration portal of our application. In
this case, SSO will be restricted due to security reasons.
Try to perform Single Sign On in a new incognito/private window or in a
different
browser in order to make SSO work.
After performing SSO, I want my customers to redirect to the collections or discount offer page.
Follow the steps outlined here. to redirect your customer to collections/cart or any other page.
