How to Set Up Passkey for Two-Factor Authentication for WordPress?

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for configuring Passkey as a two- factor authentication method for WordPress users. It covers the complete passkey registration process, including selecting a device to store the passkey, scanning the QR code, and completing the setup.

Let’s see how an administrator can setup Passkey for users.

During the first login, users are prompted to configure two-factor authentication methods. This includes the Passkey method, which we will set as the default login form of WordPress.

  • Go to the Login page and enter the user’s login credentials.
Passkey 2FA - Enter login credentials

  • Choose the Passkey radio button. You are prompted to configure a two-factor method while logging in for the very first time.
Passkey 2FA - Select Passkey

  • Click on the Add a Passkey button to start registering a new passkey.
Passkey 2FA - Add Passkey

  • A Windows Security pop-up will appear, asking you where you want to save your passkey. You will see two options:
    1. iPhone, iPad, or Android Device
    2. Security Key
  • You can select either option based on your preference. In this guide, we will select iPhone, iPad, or Android Device.
  • Next, a QR code will be displayed on the screen. Scan the QR code using your phone or tablet to continue the setup.
  • Now, you must carefully store the backup codes provided to you. These codes will help you log in when you become locked out of your account for any reason.
  • Click Finish Setup to complete.
Passkey 2FA - Backup Codes

  • The user has successfully logged into the account.
Passkey 2FA - Successfully login

  • Once the Passkey method is set up for your account, you can use the registered passkey during your next login. Authenticating with the passkey will allow you to log in successfully.
