How to set up 2FA Remember Device with the 2-Factor Authentication plugin for WordPress?

The '2FA Remember Device' feature allows users to bypass the Two-Factor authentication step on trusted devices for a specific period. This means that, once a user verifies their identity on a device, they won’t be asked for the 2FA code again on that same device for a specific duration. It makes the login process quicker and smoother without compromising security.

Let’s see how an administrator set up 2FA Remember Device for users.

  • Go to the 2FA Configuration tab in the miniOrange 2-Factor Authentication plugin, and then click on the Advanced Features subtab.
  • Select the checkbox to enable the Remember Device option.
  • Two-Factor Authentication Remember Device - 2FA Configuration tab

  • Here, we provide two options:
    1. Give users an option to enable 'Remember Device': When this option is enabled, the user will be asked to select '2FA Remember Device' during login.
    2. Silently enable 'Remember Device': When this option is enabled, the user won't be asked to select '2FA Remember Device' during login. Their device will be remembered automatically.
    3. (I have selected the first option in this.)

  • You can set the number of days to remember the device and also limit the number of remembered devices per user.
  • When the device limit is reached, you will have two options to proceed. When the device limit is reached, you will have two options to proceed.
    1. Ask for Two Factor: When enabled, the user will be prompted for 2FA during login.
    2. Deny Access: When the device limit is exceeded, the user will see an 'Access Denied' error during login, as shown below.
