How to Setup Authenticator Apps in WordPress miniOrange Two-Factor Authentication plugin?

Authenticator apps provide an extra layer of security through two-factor authentication (2FA). This guide helps you setup Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, FreeOTP Authenticator, Duo Authenticator, Authy, and LastPass Authenticator to generate one-time passcodes (OTP) for secure logins. You can use them for multiple accounts on Android and iOS, even without the internet.

Setup Google Authenticator App for miniOrange Two-Factor Authentication plugin

Note: You can install Google Authenticator App from the Google Play Store for android and the Apple App Store for iOS respectively.


After setting up the 2FA plugin, users are prompted to configure two-factor authentication methods. This includes the Google Authenticator method, which we will set on the default WordPress login form. (You can set it up on any other login form.)

  • Navigate to the Login page and enter the user’s login credentials.

  • Choose the “Google/Authy/Microsoft Authenticator” radio button. You are prompted to configure a two-factor method while logging in for the very first time.

  • The configuration process of Google Authenticator setup is divided into three steps:-

    1. Choose Google Authenticator from the dropdown (in this case you will already find it selected.)

    2. Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone. Click on the Plus button and scan the QR code.

    3. Copy the 2FA Code generated in the Google Authenticator app in your mobile phone and enter the 2FA code in the text box provided and click on the Verify button.

    Note: Now, must carefully store the backup codes provided to you. These codes will help you login when you are locked out of your account for any reason.

  • Click on the Finish button to complete the setup.

  • The user has successfully logged into the account.
    • Setup Google authenticator - login to the admin account

  • Once the Google Authenticator method is set up for your account, a 2FA code will be generated in the app on your mobile phone during your next login. Enter this code in the provided text box to complete the login process successfully.

Note: After logging in with a backup code, you will need to reconfigure the Google Authenticator method for your account.

Setup Microsoft Authenticator App for miniOrange Two-Factor Authentication plugin

Note: You can install Microsoft Authenticator App from the Google Play Store for android and the Apple App Store for iOS respectively.
